In one of the ongoing initial projects within ANItA, a Swedish national competence centre for nuclear power technology, work is performed to identify small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) designs that are suitable for Sweden's electricity generation in the relatively near future. Three or five of the next-generation SMR reactors will be built at the Ringhals plant in southwestern Sweden. State utility Vattenfall will choose either Rolls-Royce or. Small modular reactors (SMR) are much smaller than the current nuclear reactors (300 MWe or less) and have compact and scalable designs which propose to offer safety, construction, and economic benefits, and offering potential for lower initial capital investment and scalability.
